Viburnum Diseases

Many growers in Florida face challenges propagating and growing Viburnum species.  Leaf spots, defoliation, shoot dieback and potential death of plants can occur if the environment, weather conditions, and diseases are in the right alignment to favor fungal outbreaks.  Over the last few years our research team (Dr. Gary Vallad and his pathology lab, Dr. Wael Elwakil, and myself) have been working on the identification of disease pathogens and their fungicidal control with the help of an FNGLA Research Endowment Grant.  So, what have we learned from our work?  Here is a summation of the important lessons we have learned.

We thought that downy mildew was the main culprit causing leaf spots blotches and defoliation.  This might be true when the weather is slightly cool, for instance in early spring.  When weather turns to hot and rainy, there are a whole host of other fungal pathogens we identified that cause very similar symptoms on the leaves and shoots.  These fungi are hard to distinguish from downy mildew and require a different approach to which fungicides should be used to control them.

Our efficacy studies have had mixed results due to the fact we were initially targeting downy mildew with very specific fungicides.  We learned that the other fungal pathogens were better controlled with non-downy mildew, general foliar spot type fungicides.

We presented this work at our last Grower and Landscape Field Day.  We have also presented these results to the FNGLA in a research report as well as conveying the findings to our colleagues at various scientific and extension meetings.

For a closer look at which fungicides we used and the results, here is a link to a video we made to better explain our results.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8omLE9yu6q4

Your Assistance Needed- Miracle Outreach Center Landscape Charity Project

Betty Jo Tompkins reached out to me for nursery and landscape assistance with a charity project.  They are looking for charitable individuals or businesses to donate time, talent or plants on a landscape refreshment for the Miracles Outreach Center.  The Center is in pretty rough landscape shape (see pictures below).  They are especially looking for a landscape design and plant material, as they think they will have plenty of labor.   If you are able to donate anything please reach out to her.   Here is the information below and I’ve attached the flyer for you to look over with more specific information.

Miracles Outreach Center is a residential facility for abused, abandoned and sex trafficked children located at 13129 St. Francis Lane, Thonotosassa. It is a 501 c.3 and this project has been officially approved by 4-H. We'd like to do as much as we can to enhance the property and  maybe be able to  come back at some point and add a gazebo, picnic tables, etc.  Any help will be greatly appreciated. We will continue to secure donations and expect to have a large number of participants. Please call Betty Jo Tompkins (813) 477.8332 with any questions.

Agriculture Worker Protection Standard Online Virtual Class

The Agricultural Worker Protection Standards (WPS) provides rules and regulations to protect agricultural workers from pesticide exposure from the workplace.  The implementation of these standards and enforcement is done by our local Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service employees.  If you are a employer at a farm, nursery, greenhouse, or forest you will need to give your employees specific WPS training.  You are allowed to administer the teaching if you either have a valid restricted use pesticide license or you have passed the WPS Train-the-Trainer training.  UF/IFAS Extension now offers this class virtually so you can take it whenever you like.  Here is the link to the class if you are interested.  WPS EPA-Approved Train the Trainer Course - Farm Labor Education (instructure.com) The cost is $35.00.
